The Consultant's Blog July 2012
Time is FREE; it isn’t subject to recession, interest rates, inflation or government intervention. You cannot buy it,
sell it, or store it. It is the only aspect of human life where we are all truly equal; we each have 24 hours each day.
So why is it that some people seem to achieve extraordinary successes on a regular basis, while others appear to be equally busy
but get nowhere near the levels of achievement they would like? And why is it that your colleague working in an identical environment
and job role seems able to match your performance and yet still have time to take a leisurely lunch hour and leave work on-time
every evening apparently “stress-free”?!
If you are one of the many consultants struggling to meet your deadlines, finding that every task you are given is ‘urgent’ and
are being pulled in to back to back meetings to discuss the next priorities, perhaps its time to take back control of your working
day.
Take a first step – eliminate procrastination and see how much more you can achieve:
- Accept that everyone procrastinates. Do not waste any more time feeling guilty! Note your preferred method of procrastination and concentrate on dealing with it.
Reduce it, Minimise it, Remove it!- Be tough with yourself - start the unpleasant task NOW!
- Commit yourself to a start time and stick to it
- “Single handle” paperwork
- Break down large tasks into manageable portions. Eat the elephant in small bite-size chunks!
- Have a clear idea of priority and do the most unpleasant things first. Do not allow yourself to be distracted by “urgent” or “pleasant” tasks.
- Then reward yourself. Socialising is the reward, not the excuse for delay
Unless you acknowledge that you are fully responsible for your own actions you will never achieve what you want within the time available.
We have time for anything, but not everything! It is not time we are short of; it is how we choose to consume it which requires attention. For even more great tips on how to manage your time effectively, contact me for our ‘Challenging Time’ course.
