The Consultant's Blog October 2012
In these times of economic doom and gloom, the harsh realities of a recession such as redundancies, expense cut backs,
lack of bonuses, and a very real fear of losing your consulting job or not being able to get the next contract cause us
all to feel a little ‘stressed out’.
When people talk about being ‘stressed out’, it's usually because they are caught in a negative stress cycle. There are important
similarities between the negative stress cycle and a vicious cycle of perfectionism - mainly setting unrealistic goals!
What is perfectionism? To be a perfectionist does not mean that you have to be perfect at something. Perfectionists often...
- Set very high standards for themselves and others.
- Often feel frustrated when they don't meet their goals.
- Feel guilty when things go wrong -- even when they are not directly involved.
- Intentionally set goals they know are almost impossible to reach.
- Are hardly ever really satisfied with their performance.
- Procrastinate. Big time.
- Procrastination is a symptom of perfectionism. Perfectionists fear they won't be able to complete the task perfectly, so they try to put it off as long as possible.
As professional SAP consultants, aiming for perfection is fine, so long as we keep a realistic view of what we can manage within the time and resources we have available. Using our time management skills, tapping into our SAP networks for assistance when we hit problems, referring back to the SAP Service Marketplace for ‘the facts’ about the functionality we are dealing with and setting ourselves realistic and achievable goals will help us manage our stress levels.
Remember this important quote from the movie “The Secret” by Drew Heriot:
Whatever is going on in your mind is what you are attracting. We are like magnets - like attract like. You become AND attract what you think.
Even Henry Ford once said “If you think you can, or if you think you can’t, you are right!”
So manage your stress, ALWAYS think positive and the future will take care of itself. Keep Calm and Carry On!
