The Consultant's Blog August 2012
To be a successful consultant, most of us will consider investments in a suitable professional wardrobe of clothes,
a decent haircut and the courses and materials required to learn our trade, worthwhile and complete.
Sure, we will
update our clothes and get regular haircuts. Some of us will even invest a bit of time in learning about new releases
and new functionality.
But is that enough? You are your own best asset. Are you leveraging yourself to your best possible advantage? Are you living
or earning to your full potential? Or are you just another of those middle of the road resources, who does a decent enough job, looks at
their strengths and weaknesses once a quarter during the compulsory performance review and then plods on, unchanging!
Each of us have a unique mix of skills, experience, and strengths. But we all have areas in our working lives where we
know we could be better, do better, achieve better.
- Do you avoid public speaking and dread having to run workshops?
- Do you hate the detail involved in writing unit test scripts and do the absolute minimum to get the test passed?
- Have you stopped looking for answers because you think you know them all, offering the same old solution time and time again?
- Do you still enjoy your work?
Too many consultants neglect their own development, thinking its not important or someone else will take care of it for them (i.e. send them on a course!).
Imagine ‘upgrading’ yourself every six months, as you do your wardrobe!
If you could gain a clearer insight into your own limiting beliefs, learn something new to add to your CV, turn at least one ‘weakness’ into a strength, imagine the difference it could make to your everyday life and to your long term career.
There are so many resources available to us all via the internet, our own networks, social media like LinkedIn and our SAP forums. There are online training courses on anything you can think of, self development / meditation / life balancing information, books full of great practical advice (such as mine!) and good people willing to spend time answering your questions and helping you learn.
You really have no excuse for not finding answers to questions, learning more about yourself and becoming a better consultant as a result.
You upgrade your car regularly – so what’s holding you back from investing in yourself?
